WE, the undersigned Emigrants by the Katherinc Stewart Forbes, are desirous to convey our warmest gratitude to Captain Hobbs for the anxious solicitude evinced by him for our safety, during a tedious and perilous voyage from England to New Zealand. We are the more desirous of testifying our sense of his kindness, because he had in many instances interposed when others in a minor charge attempted to destroy our peace and quiet. We would also add that the discipline and seamanship displayed by Captain Hobbs has entirely secured our respect and admiration.
We also tender our thanks to the chief and second mates, for their united civility and kindness during the voyage.

We regret to chronicle the death of Mr. Samuel Gaskin, one of the oldest settler in the neighbourhood of Wellington, which occurred at his late residence, Makara, yesterday morning. The deceased gentleman arrived in the colony on 12th June, 1841, by the Catherine Stuart Forbes, and lived for many years in Wellington and at Lower Hutt. About 20 years ago he removed to Makara, where he has ever since been engaged in farming pursuits. Mr. Gaskin was 77 years of age, and leaves a numerous circle of relatives to mourn his decease. We learn that his descendants comprise ten children, 67 grand-children, and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs Mary Gaskin, one of the oldest settlers in the Makara district, died on Sunday, at the advanced age of ninety-one years. Mrs Gaskin and her late husband arrived in Wellington in 1841 in the ship Catherine Stuart Forbes, and settled at Wadestown, where they resided for fifteen years. After that they removed to Makara, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Mrs Gaskin''s husband pre-deceaeed her by thirteen years. The deceased lady leaves five sons (three of whom reside at Makara and two sons in the Palmerston North district) and five daughters.
