Hi Caroline,
I recently met you delightful daughter at an AUT function in Wellington. She later emailed me with your email address included. I thought I should send a quick Hello to a new relative.
I am a past President of Christ Church, Taita - Wellington''s Oldest Church and we are keen to connect with all descendants of the settler families involved in the building of Christ Church. You will probably be aware that the first wedding to take place there was of Mary Jane Mabey to James Harris 10 days after the church was opened.
They are my ancestors - probably yours too?
I spent many happy times in the beautiful Mabey garden in High Street as a child and have very fond memories of the place. Beth Mabey died recently. I''m not sure if you knew her.
The website is -

I hope you get an opportunity to visit some time. The Carol Service is on 7 December this year. It would be wonderful if you and your family could attend.
Kind regards,
Anne Erwin

The parents of a well-known Taita resident, Mr. Job Mabey, arrived in 1841. The Mabeys had two whares, and alternated between them, sleeping in one and living in the other, so that the Maoris were never sure where they might be found. On one occasion the alarm was given that the Maoris were approaching, but Mrs. Mabey, determined to save her treasures, encountered a chief in the doorway. Inwardly quaking, she presented a bold front, and as courage was a quality always respected by the Maoris, she was unmolested.

A typical old colonist, Mr. Job Mabey, whose features have been preserved for posterity by the artist''s brush of Mr. J. M. Nairn, died at the Taita this week quite unexpectedly, at the age of 86. The old fellow had not been in his usual robust health lately, being unable to sleep properly. On Tuesday morning he rose early for the purpose of cutting some oats, and while talking to a neighbour fell down and expired quite suddenly. Deceased, who arrived in Wellington by the ship Olympus in 1841, and settled at the Taita three years later, was a celebrity in the district, and though a rough diamond, was of a genial and kindly disposition. He was buried in the old Taita Cemetery yesterday morning, the Rev. Mr. Jones conducting the service.
