A very old resident of Wellington passed away at the Lower Hutt at 3.45 a.m. yesterday, in the person of Mr. John Southee. Mr. Sonthee, who was a miller by trade, arrived in Wellington by the ship Lady Nugent some 50 years ago, and was for many years employed in Kebbell''s flour mill the building at the back of Dr. Pollen''s residence in what is now Manners-street, but was then the beach. Mrs. Southee came out with her husband, but died 17 years ago. After several years at Kebbell''s mill, Mr. Southee went out to the mill at the Hutt, where he remained a considerable time, leaving it to take up business as a carrier in town. It says much for his vigour that, though he was 95 years of age at the time of his death, he carried on active work as a carrier until two years ago, when he took a well-earned rest. He remained in full possession of his facilties to the last, and was about till last Monday. On Tuesday he took to his bed, and he quietly expired next morning of old age.
