Fatality in a Quarry.
Another verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest touching the death of George James Auger, a quarry owner, of Penrose, who died from injuries received during blasting operations on December 16.
Mr. W R McKean, S.M.. presided and Serjeant Capp represented the police.
Yictor Manuel Sammons stated that he was a quarry manager. On December 16 he was working at Auger''s quarry at Penrose. In the morning, witness fired five shots and in the afternoon made preparations to explode two more. When about to fire, he gave the usual warning before lighting the fuse and when the other men moved away he called out "fire". He used about five feet of fuse, and saw the men get out of the way, considering that they were quite safe. The two shots were fired from the top of a cliff, and after the second had been exploded, some stones flew towards the men some of the metal striking deceased. Witness added that he took every precaution and considered that the men were not in danger.
The coroner found that death was due to haemorrhage and shock following on a severe wound in the back, accidentaly received by deceased at Anger''s quarry on December 16. The usual precautions appeared to have been taken by the man who fired the shot, and the deceased and other men had ample time to get further away, but they considered that they were in safety. The occurrence was quite accidental, no blame being attachable to the man responsible for exploding the charge.
