JONES - BURT.- On Saturday, 14th January, 1893, at the residence of Mr Robert Orr, by the Rev W. Cannel, of Hawera, assisted by the Revs F. N. Griffin and J. G. Chapman, Ernest Broderick, youngest son of Mr W. Jones, to Blanche Beatrice, fifth daughter of the late Mr Thomas Burt, of the Lower Hutt.

A wedding took place at the residence of Mr. Robert Orr, Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon, the contracting parties being Mr E. B. Jones and Miss Blanche Burt, both being well known and highly esteemed in that district. A large number of friends and relations of the bride and bridegroom were present. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. W. Cannel, of Hawera, assisted by the two local ministers. Revs. T. N. Griffin and J. G. Chapman. The bride was attired in a cream Cashmere, trimmed with chiffon lace and ribbons, and carried a beautiful bouquet. The bridesmaids were Misses Gertrude Burt (sister of the bride), and Miss Jones, both being dressed in salmon beige, trimmed with ribbons to match, and each carried a tastefully arranged bouquet. Mr. Herbert Jones, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. At the conclusion of the ceremony the party adjourned to another room, where breakfast was served. It may be mentioned that through the late fire at the Hutt the bride had the misfortune to lose almost the whole of her wedding presents. The cake was a large three-decker, made by Mr. Wm. Burt, of Featherston.

JONES.- On the 18th October, at Otaki, Ernest Broderick, third son of the late William Jones, Lower Hutt, aged 34 years. The funeral will leave Te Manno, Otaki, for the Mission Cemetery on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Mr. Ernest B. Jones, who for many years was an assistant master at the Petone School, and later on went into partnership with Mr. G. M. Yerex in the American importing business, died at Otaki yesterday. Some two and a half years ago Mr. Jones''s health broke down, and he took a trip with his wife to Australia and America, returning much improved in health. Shortly afterwards, however, he caught influenza, which threw him back, and he has never since recovered properly. He leaves a widow and two children.

MR. E. P. RISHWORTH, late of Lower Hutt, whose death is announced in to-day''s issue.

Mr. E. P. Rishworth, whose death took place on Friday at the age of 60 years, was one of the best known men in Lower Hutt, where he practised his profession as a dentist for many years. Mr. Rishworth''s principal public work was in connection with educational matters; he was for many years chairman of the Hutt District High School committee, and a representative of the Hutt Valley on the Wellington Education Board. Until quite recently he was chairman of the Hutt Valley High School Board of Governors, and he was instrumental in obtaining from the Government the site on which the High School stands. In 1919 he unsuccessfully contested the Hutt Parliamentary seat in the interests of the Reform Party. He was Mayor of Lower Hutt in 1920 to 1921, losing the seat after a strenuous contest in which he advocated the establishment of a local gasworks as an alternative to the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Board. Mr. Rishworth was a prominent member of the Waiwetu Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Lower Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club. He is survived by his widow and a grown-up family. The funeral, which took place to-day, was attended by representatives of all the Lower Hutt local bodies, and of the schools in the district.

E. P. RISHWORTH.
By the Hand of Death on Friday last there was taken from our midst Eric Percival Rishworth, a man whose life was one of love and service to his fellow man. During the past eight years he has not been prominently in the public eye, consequently he may to a newer generation of borough resident scarcely be so familiar a name or figure as he was to those who knew him and his many activities between the years 1910 to 1921. No man has done more for education - primary, secondary and technical — than did Mr. Rishworth and this he did, not only because he was fully assured of the advantages of a sound education and wished to bring such Within the reach of all, but because of his love for young people, a love that with him amounted almost to a passion. He served as Chairman of the Hutt District High School Cmmittee (sic) for a number of years and his enthusiasm fired those who served under him, so that that (sic) school was particularly well looked after. He represented this district on the Education Board and this gave him further opportunities of rendering good service to all the schools in the Valley. He was one of the first to recognise the necessity for the establishment of technical classes in Lower Hutt so he, in conjunction with the late Mr. Henry Baldwin, took the matter up, and despite many difficulties these classes were established and to-day we have a flourishing evening Technical School where more classes exist this session than ever obtained previously. This is a tribute to Mr. Rishworth''s vision and to his tenacity of purpose. But even there Mr. Rishworth was not content to rest and he took the lead in, a movement to secure for the Valley a secondary school to be built in Lower Hutt. There was first the battle for a site, and this was fought to a successful issue, so that to-day, thanks to such men as
Rishworth and Baldwin, we have a fine site in Woburn Road and a secondary school staffed and equipped equal to the best in the Dominion. Truly the High School has been hard hit by the deaths of two such giants in educational progress as the late H. Baldwin and E. P. Rishworth. Mr. Rishworth was Chairman of the Board of Governors from its inception in 1925 until June 1929. The founding of the School was perhaps the main work of his later years. He was almost a daily visitor until the institution was well established. The Principal recently placed his appreciation of Mr. Rishworth''s work on record in these words: "His influence has been very great indeed. As chairman he gave dignity to the Board and to the school; he was steadfastness, probity and loyalty personified." While such educational institutions exist in out midst there need be no fear that these men will be forgotten — they live in the hearts of th (sic) people. The Mayoralty claimed Mr. Rishworth for several years and his period of office was marked by careful administration and well guarded finance. Then arose the controversy over the question of a locally owned gas works which was championed by Mr. Rishworth versus an amalgamation with Petone in their existing works. This led to a contest for the Mayoral Chair and in the defeat of Mr Rishworth. Hundreds of ratepayers, fully recognising the grand character and administrative qualities of Mr. Rishworth, voted against him because of their objection to the gas-works being planted in the midst of a residential area. Mr. Rishworth could have compromised and retained his hold on the mayoralty but such was not the man. He saw his line of action and as all such strong and dominant men do, he followed that course without deviation because, in his own mind, he felt assured that his course was the best for the borough. Perhaps the finest work he did while Mayor was done during the epidemic of 1918. Before many other places had recognised the necessity for a concerted plan of campaign for the care of the sick, he had organised his workers, secured the Lyceum Hall and other public buildings for use as temporary hospitals, gathered together stretches, blankets, comforts
and dainties and choosing his section leaders, set to-work to see that every house was visited, every sufferer attended to, and the dead given a decent burial. His work was a troumph (sic) of organisation and all his workers were inspired to the most strenuous efforts by the masterly control of their leader, E. P. Rishworth. He was a man of most kindly disposition - one who hated ostentation — but who did many works of charity known only to a few — a man of the highest integrity whose word was his bond. If one may say it kindly, he was too intense ���when he undertook a thing he put heart and soul into it, and was perhaps, because of this intensity, a little inclined to take a set back too seriously. But to him life was a serious problem and his service to his fellow-man was his way of showing his sympathy for, and an understanding of, the other fellow''s difficulties in life. He has gone from among us, but his example and his works remain a tribute to one who was, in the fullest and truest sense of the word, a gentleman. To his widow and family we desire to extend our deep sympathy; they will, we are sure, be comforted by the thought that the borough mourns his loss and feels that after strenuous years of labour he has entered into his well-earned rest.

THE LATE E. P. RISHWORTH''S FUNERAL.
There was a large and representative gathering at the funeral of the late Mr E. P. Rishworth on Monday afternoon last. The funeral cortege left for the Taita Cemetery after an impressive service conducted by Rev C. H. Olds at the Methodist Church, Laings Road. The pall bearers were Rt. Wor. Bro. H. Giuiness (sic), W. Bro.s T. H. Sherwood, H. E. Leighton and Rt. Wor. Bro. H. G. Teagle, who also represented the Hutt Valley Board of Governors with Mr H. P. Kidson, the Town Clerk, Mr B. S. Knox. Other representatives and friends who attended were Sir Alex.
Roberts and Cr. J. Mitchell (present council), Messrs E. P. Bunny and W. T. Strand (past mayors); Mr. A. McBain (Advisory Board of the Technical School): Messrs Millard and McNaught staff and pupils of the Hutt Valley High School. Messrs Stewart and Blake (Wellington Education Board); Mr. R. D. Elliott (Dental Division of the Health Dept.); Dr. Morpeth and Mr. D. McGoun (executive of N.Z. Dental Association, of which deceased was a past president); Messrs. Stonehouse, Campbell, J. Kennnigton and A. Burgess (Hutt Bowling Club); Mr. A. J. Nicholls, (Hutt Valley Horticultural Society); Rev J. McCaw (Knox Church).
Among the relatives of the deceased present were, Mr. Rishworth of Masterton (brother); Messrs Eric and Cyril Rishworth (sons); Mr E. L. Jones (step-son); Mr. E. D. Harland (nephew).
The High School prefects attended the church service and senior boys lined the approach to the church.

Rev. C. H. Olds conducted the burial service and the Masonic Rites were performed by the Worshipful Master of the Waiwetu Lodge.

Obituary.
Mrs. Blanche (sic) Beatrice Rishworth, widow of the late Mr. E. P. Rishworth, who was for several years Mayor of Lower Hutt, and Mrs. Ellen Orr, wife of Mr. Robert Orr, of Heke street, Lower Hutt, a prominent citizen of Lower Hutt, both died on Wednesday. Mrs. Rishworth and Mrs. Orr were daughters of the late Thomas Burt, one of the first business men of Lower Hutt, and a prominent figure in the Methodist Church.
