A QUARREL AT THS TAITA.
Lucy Lockhead was summoned for assaulting Sophia Harris at the Taita on the 30th March. Mrs. Harris, on a cross-summons was charged with assaulting Lucy Lockhead. Mr. Gordon Allan appeared for Harris, and Mr. Stafford for Lockhead. It appeared that a girl named Nelly Johnson, her mother being dead, and the father, it was alleged, having neglected to support her, was adopted by an uncle and placed in the charge of Mrs. Harris. The defendant Lockhead and her mother, who is an aunt of the girl Johnson, hearing, as the former alleged, that the child was ill-treated, went to Mrs. Harris'' to see her. Mrs. Harris said that the girl was not at home, although in Court she admitted that she was in the house at the time. Harris alleged that Lookhead used bad langnage, and slapped her in the face. This the latter denied, alleging that Harris abused her and assaulted her. The magistrate dismissed both informations, saying that it appeared to bo simply a case of recrimination between angry women on both sides, and the evidence was so contradictory that he would not be justified in convicting on either charge. He thought it would be bettor in many of these cases if the parties were to wash their "dirty linen at home."

HARRIS.- On 21st (sic) September, at 9.50 pm, at her residence, Taita, Sophia Harris, relict of the late Abrahma Harris, aged 77 years.
-
Another of Wellington''s oldest settlers passed away last evening in the person of Mrs. Sophia Harris, relict of the late Mr. Abraham Harris, of the Taita. Mrs. Harris arrived in Wellington with her husband in one of the pioneer vessels in 1840. Here they settled for some years, and then removed to the Taita, where Mr. Harris engaged in sawmilling business. They experienced the many hardships that were undergone by the early settlers, and also were obliged with others for a while to give up their home during the troublous times experienced with the natives. The war over, they, with the rest of the settlers, returned to the Hutt district. Mrs. Harris survived her husband some 15 years, and succumbed last evening, through general decay, at the ripe age of 77. There was a large family of ten children, all of whom are living, while grandchildren and great-grandchildren make up a family circle of about 70. Mrs. Harris was greatly respected throughout the district, and was well known to all old settlers in this province, who will sympathise with her family in their loss.
Evening Post 24 September 1888
THE Friends of the late Mrs. Sophia Harris are respectfully invited to attend her Funeral, which will leave her late residence, Taita, on Tuesday, 25th September, at 3 o''clock p.m.
