SUDDEN DEATH.
An old man named Stephen Swaysland, an inmate of the Old Men''s Home, was found dead in the garden of the Home about 5 30 o''clock this morning. It would appear that Swaysland, who is about 64 years of age, has been suffering from heart disease for some considerable time past, and has been under the treatment of Dr Williams. He has been in a very weak state, and on Wednesday last was seized with a fit while in the closet, from which be recovered, and was able to again make his way from thence back into the institution. None of the inmates of the Home are aware at what hour he left the institution this morning, but a man named Mockhart, who slept in the same room with him, states that they retired to bed about the usual hour last night, and after conversing for some time together, fell asleep. Upon awakening between 4 and 5 o''clock this morning, Mockhart saw that Swaysland was absent, and upon, going outside, the unfortunate man was found dead between the closet and the Home. He had apparently been seized with a fit and fallen, as there is a nasty bruise under his right eye, and another on his forehead, evidently caused by his falling to the ground He was conveyed to the morgue at the Hospital, where a post mortem was made by Dr Williams, who found that deceased heart was very much diseased, and he will give a certificate to that effect, so that no inquest will be held.
The necessity of having some suitable person at the Home to look after the inmates was only recently referred to in our columns, while it has also been urged upon the Charitable Aid Board by its Secretary (Mr Bruce), but up to the present nothing has been done in this direction. Here we have the case of a feeble inmate of the Home, who leaves the building during the night without anyone being aware of it, and is found dead in the garden next morning, which should certainly be sufficient evidence in itself to convince members of the Board that it is high time some person was placed in charge of the Home, who would reside on the premises and carefully attend to the wants of the old men and see that the institution was properly managed.
