Charles Frederick Swaysland - son of Stephen Adolphus Swaysland
Charles Frederick Swaysland was no doubt named after Stephen Adolphus Swaysland''s younger brother. Charles Frederick; like his brother John Foster (Jack) never married. Uncle Charlie as my mother referred to him, seemed to spend his life as a gardener. Born on the Hutt Valley in 1863, at some point in his life Charles went north to Devonport, a Naval Base town. This is where he died on 6 April 1942 aged 78 at the "Knox Home Tamaki West". It may well be Charles moved to Devonport to be near his brother Thomas Augustus, who lived there with his second wife Florence Maslen. Thomas Augustus died in Devonport on 24 February 1931, eleven years before Charles.
When Charles Frederick died, Richard, his older brother who lived in the Hutt Valley, arranged for his brother, Charlie''s body to be returned by train to the Hutt Valley so that he could be buried with his mother at "Christ Church Anglican Church" Taita.
On the day of the funeral, panic set in when his brother Richard was informed that brother Charlie''s body was missing. The "Undertaker" had made arrangements to pick up the body from the train on arrival from Auckland. He had been previous advised of which carriage that it would be in. On arrival at the railway station on the day of the funeral, Charlie''s body could not be found. The body was finally found in another carriage, giving the Undertaker 20 minutes to get it to the funeral!
