Mrs. Reuben Short, one of the oldest of the early settlers of Port Nicholson, who died on Tuesday last, was born in Kent in 1824. She arrived in Port Nicholson with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Southee, on the Lady Nugent, in 1841, and with them endured the usual hardships of an infant settlement. In 1848 (sic) she married the late Mr. Richard Clifton, who was accidentally killed in 1855 (sic), leaving one son and two daughters. In 1861 she married tho late Mr. Reuben Short, and lived to celebrate their diamond wedding. There are one son and two daughters of the second marriage. Mrs. Short is survived by five of her children, about fifty grandchildren, and a good number of great-grandchildren. She had been, with her late husband, a resident of Palmerston North for a great number of years, although her earlier days were passed in the Hutt. For some little time she had resided with her eldest son, Mr. Samuel Clifton, at Rekiorangi (sic), where she died six months after completing the century.
