ST. JAMES'', LOWER HUTT
The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. James'', Lower Hutt, was held recently, the. Rev. H. E. K. Fry presiding.
The annual report dealt with the work of the parish, the departure of Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, and Mrs. Hansell, and of the Rev. W. E. Davies and Mrs. Davies, and the arrival of the Rev. H. E. K. Fry and Mrs. Fry, and of the Rev. H. V. C. Reynolds. Most satisfactory and encouraging reports of the choir, C.E.M.S., the Mothers'' Union, St. James'' Girls'' Club, and Sunday'' school were also included. The Waiwetu and Belmont churches reported progress as to both finance and attendance, and St. James'' Tennis Club had well maintained its position among the clubs of the valley. The, following were elected members of the vestry:— Messrs. W. H. Barker, A. W. Foote, G. L. Gieson, S. M. Hobbs, H. A. Lines, H. B. Robb. W. H. Smith, A. S. Kempthorne, Cowie, and Arnold. Mr. W. J. Jarman was elected vicar''s churchwarden, Mr. R. E. (sic) House parishioners'' churchwarden, and Mr. Arnold representative to synod.

Farewell and Presentation.
An enjoyable evening was spent in the Taita Hall on Wednesday, when the church members and friends bade farewell to the Rev. H. V. C. Reynolds, who is leaving shortly to take up missionary work in Melanesia. Community singing was led by Mr. Kempthorne and Miss Brooks. Fancy dancing items by K. and V. Colson, N. August, and N. Peck were enjoyed, as also were those given by Mr. House and T. Gadsby. An excellent supper was handed round, and dancing and games were indulged in. Mr. Kempthorne, on behalf of the parishioners, presented Mr. Reynolds with a watch, suitably engraved. Mr. Reynolds thanked those present, and said it had given him great pleasure to minister among the people of Taita. Mr. Fry, introduced Mr. Neild, who was heartily welcomed. The committee added their thanks to all who helped to make the function a success.

MR. A. S. KEMPTHORNE, O.B.E.
A recipient of the O.B.E. in the last New Year Honours List Mr Arthur Selwyn Kempthorne, of Lower Hutt, died at a private hospital in Auckland yesterday at the age of 62 years. The late Mr. Kempthorne, who received the award for his works as secretary of the Anglican Military Affairs Committee between 1940 and 1943, was a brother of Bishop L. S. Kempthorne, of Polynesia, and the Rev. F. M. Kempthorne, Vicar of Karori.
Born at Greymouth, Mr. Kempthorne was the third son of the late Archdeacon J. P. Kempthorne, of Nelson, and attended Nelson Boys College. In 1902 he joined the Eastern Extension Cable Company. Two years later he was transferred from the training station at Nelson to Hong Kong. He served at the company''s station at Singapore, Shanghai, Cocos Island, Adelaide, Perth, and Darwin, and was afterwards appointed to the company''s office at Wellington. In 1931, he retired, and took up residence in Bellevue Road, Lower Hutt, where he lived until his death. His interests after his retirement, were mainly with church activities, and at the time of his death he was secretary of the Anglican Boys'' Homes Society a position he had held since 1933 and lay reader and synodsman of the St James''s Parish, Lower Hutt, to which he was appointed in 1934. A foundation member and former chairman of the Hutt Valley Toc H, he also served as Dominion registrar of the Toc H Society for some years. Mr. Kempthorne was known chiefly for his work as secretary of the Anglican Military Affairs Committee, the controlling authority of the Church Army, which provided amenities and comforts for servicemen in the New Zealand Forces. He held this position for three years.
Mr. Kempthorne married in the Far East, but his wife predeceased him. A daughter, Mrs. A. L. Ward, of Auckland survives him. A son, Private John Kempthorne, Was killed while serving in the Middle East with the New Zealand Forces.
