LAST TRIBUTE
LATE ARCHDEACON KEMPTHORNE
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
NELSON, 22nd September.
The funeral of the late Archdeacon Kempthorne yesterday afternoon was well attended by the clergy of the Diocese and the public. The service at the Cathedral was conducted by Dean Askew and the graveside service by the Bishop of Nelson, Dr. W. Sadlier.
Speaking at the Cathedral, the Bishop paid a fitting tribute to the valuable work done by the late Archdeacon. Dr. Sadlier said it was fitting that he, as Bishop of the Diocese, should, in the Cathedral where the Archdeacon had faithfully served for 3O years, pay a tribute to the deceased. Archdeacon Kempthorne life of ministry in the city had left its mark. He was an exemplary citizen and an exemplary Christian. To-day there should be only a song of joy to mark the Archdeacon''s passing, as he had finished his course and kept his great faith. Forty-six years ago Archdeacon Kempthorne had moved the resolution as a result of which the St. Andrews Orphanage had been established and many throughout New Zealand had much to thank that institution for. In the days of the late Bishop Suter the Archdeacon had gone to the assistance of the Whakarewa Home at Motueka and since then had always been a great helper in the work done by the home. "He was pure in thought, generous of word, loyal and sincere, a good Christian a kind churchman, and a loyal devoted friend."
The pall bearers were Messrs. T. E. Maunsell, E. A. Wood, C. A. Goldsmith, W. Thompson, G. Samuel, and A. R. Dyson.
