Mr. James Welch, a widely-known and highly-respected settler of Opaki, died from heart disease yesterday, at his residence, Willow Park, after an illness of about three months. Mr Welch was very popular, his kindly and cheerful nature having endeared him to the population of the whole district. He was connected with many public institutions for twelve years he was chairman of the Opaki school committee, steward of the Masterltn Racing Club, and vice-president of the Carlton Cricket Club. Mr. Welch married a Wellington lady (a daughter of the late Sergeant-Major Chandler), who, with five children, survives him.
