OBITUARY.
MRS HENRY WELCH
Another of the very few now left of those pioneers that marked the dawn of settlement in this now prosperous Dominion has gone to the Great Beyond. Yesterday afternoon, at about 4 o''clock, the death occurred of Mrs Henry Welch, of Lansdowne. The deceased lady was held in very high esteem throughout the Wairarapa. She was of a bright and kindly nature, and was known far and wide for her cheerful disposition. A lady of sterling qualities, she endeared herself to all who knew her by her kindly acts of thoughtfulness, and her willingness to assist those in trouble. In the days of early settlement in Wellington, the Hutt, and later at Masterton, many of the pioneers were greatly indebted to the late Mrs Welch for her many acts of kindness and self-sacrifice in making their lot lighter. Her presence was like a beam of light in a wilderness of darkness to those struggling men and women who were carving a home out of the virgin bush, and her willingness to help them in their days of trouble endeared her to the hearts of those sturdy settlers. The news of her death will be received with feelings of deep regret throughout the Wairarapa, and many a family will to-day mourn the loss of a true friend.
The late Mrs Welch was born on August 20th, 1836, at Callington, Cornwall, England, being a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Poad. With her parents she came to New Zealand in the ship Duke of Roxburgh, after which Roxburgh street, Wellington, is named. The vessel left Plymouth in October, 1839, with 167 emigrants on board, and arrived at Wellington on February 7th, 1840, losing her captain (Captain Thompson) overboard at Stephen Island two days previously. The Duke of Roxburgh was the sixth of the New Zealand Company''s boats to reach New Zealand. The late Mrs Welch was the last but two of the surviving passengers of that emigrant ship the others being Mrs Judd and Mr W. Udy, both of Greytown.
The late Mrs Welch was married on January 10th, 1856, at St. James'' Church, Lower Hutt, to Mr Henry Welch, who died on December 8th (sic) 1884. After residing in the Lower Hutt district for some years, she came with her husband to Masterton forty-three years ago, and lived here ever since.
The deceased lady leaves nine of a family to mourn their loss, and they will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. The daughters are Mesdames Duncan McLachlan (Opaki), William Bray (Gisborne), Frank Redmond (Wellington), and the sons Messrs Edward, Albert, Henry, William, Alfred (Wellington) and Arthur. Another son, Mr James Welch, died some six years ago.
The funeral will take place at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow (Wednesday).
