The death occurred at Masterton on Sunday of Mr. Frederick Percy Welch, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Welch, pioneer settlers of the Hutt Valley. Born at Taita in 1861, the late Mr. Welch went to the Wairarapa shortly after, his
marriage in Wellington about 40 years ago. He engaged in farming with his brother, Mr. George Welch, at Rangitumau for some time, and then took up his residence at Lansdowne. With the late Mr. W. Gillespie he started business as a land agent in Masterton, later taking over the business on his own account and continuing it in association with his son, until the time of his death. An excellent cricket, Rugby, and chess player, Mr. Welch took a keen interest in all branches of sport, being actively connected with the old Carlton Cricket Club and the Masterton Football Club, and one of the foundation members of the well-known Welch family cricket and Rugby teams. He was a member of the Masterton Horticultural Society. He was an active worker in all movements for the welfare of the community, and his generous disposition and genial manner won him many friends. He is survived by a widow, four sons, and three daughters. The funeral took place at Masterton
