SUDDEN DEATH OF MR JOHN HALLEY.
We regret to announce the sudden death of Mr. John Halley, of the firm of Halley and Ewing, timber merchants. Mr. Halley went to the Bank of New South Wales this morning and drew the money to pay the wages of the men, and as he was returning to his office with it at about noon he fell down in a fit near Messrs Wilkins and Field''s shop in Manners-street, and expired almost immediately. The cause of death is supposed to have been heart disease. Medical aid was obtained, but was of no avail. The body was removed to the Morgue, whence it was subsequently conveyed to the deceased''s late residence, Cambridge-terrace.
Mr. Halley was an old and respected colonist, of a retiring disposition. He entered into partnership with Mr. Ewing at Dunedin in 1864, and continued in business with him until his death. The deceased, although 70 years of age, was of active habits, and had never, we believe, been treated for any affection of the heart. He leaves a widow and a family of eight children - two sons and six daughters.
Evening Post 5 February 1900
