How they looked in 1911
Epuni School, which is to hold its 75th anniversary in July, was where the children of some well-known Lower Hutt families got their primary education, as this photograph taken in 1911 shows.
The children here form standards 3, 4, 5 and 6. The boys are wearing their newly-acquired cadet uniforms, and Corporal Lance Hall seems to be taking it all very seriously as he stands stiffly to attention at the left of the rear row.
The headmaster, Mr W A Manning, stands at the extreme left of the picture, and his two assistants, Miss E A Meager and Miss Martelli, are at the right, at the end of the second row back.
The pupils are (from left):
Back row: Lance Hall (corporal), Sam Williamson (sergeant), Roy England, Jack Sanders, Bert Peck, Francis Conroy, Fred Thorpe, Gilbert Watson, Albert Swain, George Dorne.
Third row: Bill Burns, Tom Hall, Stacey Mudgway, Graham Vaughan, George Howard, Vincent Nairn, Fred Manderson, Frank Pilcher.
Second row: Willimina Timmings, Myrtle Knight, Ida Russel (sic), Esma Smith, Marlory Hall, Ruby Pocknall, Alexa Osborne, Louie Rouse, Jean McLelland, Russell Johnston.
Front row: Gladys McLelland, Florrie Potter, Grace Sanders, Gladys Peck, Rita Howard, Olive Pilcher, not known, Amelia Pryde, not known, Flo Burns, Vera Watson.
