ACCIDENT AT UPPER HUTT.
An enquiry concerning the Upper Hutt railway fatality on Saturday afternoon was conducted yesterday by Mr. Jas. Ashcroft, District Coroner. Evidence showed that deceased, James Henry Keys, was a married man forty-two years of age. Prior to the accident, he and Wm. Cudby were screwing up a bolt on a line near the engine-shed of the Upper Hutt station. Shunting operations were being carried out at the time. Both men stood aside whilst an engine and several trucks passed, and then resumed work. A minute later several trucks without the engine came down the line unnoticed by the men. Deceased was struck down, had his neck broken, skull fractured, and sustained several other injuries. When falling he struck Cudby, who fortunately managed to scramble clear of the trucks. The fireman of the engine, it appeared, saw the danger the men were in, and whistled and waved his hand as a warning. The men were apparently endeavouring to make out his meaning when the trucks came down on them from the rear. The jury examined the locality of the accident, and found there was no one on whom they could attack blame for the fatality, which was accidental. Deceased was a careful man, and only the day before had warned his mate to take no risks. One witness stated that accidents of this kind could not always be avoided, and that platelayers were expected to take care of themselves. A suggestion was made by some of the jury that "the Government should do something." There was, however, no suggestion as to what the Government should do.
