Mr John Hughey, whose death was reported yesterday, arrived in New Zealand from England at the age of seven years, in the year 1840. He was one of the passengers on the famous ship Martha Ridgway With his parents he went to Karori, and later to the Hutt. He reached this district in 1865, and was here during the troublous times with the Maoris. He had become very friendly with the Natives, however, and they urged him and other settlers here not to go away, offering protection from any danger. Mr Hughey was one of the founders of the Wesleyan Church in the district, and was actively engaged in religious work until old age prevented him.
