UNDERWOOD.- On Sunday, 19th March, at her residence, 41, Drummond-street, after a long and painful illness, Harriet (sic) Ellen Underwood, widow of the late H. J. Underwood, in her 58th year.

The death is reported of Mrs. H. E. Underwood, at her late residence, 41, Drummond-street. She was the widow of the late Henry James Underwood, lost in the Penguin disaster, and daughter of the late John Houghton who arrived in Wellington in the Aurora on 22nd January, 1840, and the late M. A. Houghton, who arrived here, in the ship Bolton in November of the same year. Born in Willis-street, Wellington, in premises next-to the present Evening Post buildings, fifty-seven years ago, Mrs. Underwood spent her life here, and had vivid recollections of the various excitements, etc.. incidental to the lives of the early settlers. Mrs. Underwood leaves a son, Mr. Sydney H. Underwood, of Wallace-street, and a daughter. Mrs. L. Quinlan, of Howard street; three grandsons and two granddaughters.
