MILITARY FUNERAL AT THE TAITA. — On Friday last the mortal remains of William Hooper, a member of the Taita Rifle Volunteer Company were conveyed to the grave by his comrades, who assembled to mark their respect for the deceased by giving him the honors of a military funeral. Not only were most of the No. 2 Company of the Hutt Volunteers in attendance, but also the No. 2 Company Hutt Cadets; the Hutt Cavalry, No. 1 Company Hutt R.V., and the Wellington Artillery Company being represented. The whole were under the command of Major Ludlam, who had kindly and readily consented to be present and the Hutt Band, conducted by Mr Valentine, led the procession. In the solemnization the Rev. J. Herring was assisted by the Rev Dan Desbois, who had attended the deceased during his last illness.

ACCIDENT IN THE HUTT RIVER. — An accident, which well nigh proved fatal, occurred on Friday last, in the Hutt river. Captain Farmer, Lieut. Speedy, and Mr Farmer, jun,, were crossing the river in a canoe, for the purpose of attending the funeral of William Hooper at the Taita, when the canoe capsized, and its contents were precipitated into the river. Providentially no one was drowned, though they were all in extreme danger, one of the party actually floating down the river for a considerable distance, having had, though unable to swim, the presence of mind to lie quietly on his back in the water. It is believed that their swords and rifles, which they had in the canoe, will be recovered.
