OBITUARY
Mrs. Emma Eaton, a Wairarapa pioneer, passed away at her residence, Redwood street, Carterton, on Sunday at the age of 88 years (states "The Post''s" Carterton correspondent). The late Mrs. Eaton was born at Taita in 1844, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hooper, and went to the Wairarapa in 1870, when the road to Carterton was only a cart track. Her first home in this district was on land in Moreton road, and later with her husband and family, she removed to Kokotau, retiring from there 22 years ago to settle in Carterton. Mrs. Eaton experienced the hardships of the pioneering days, and had vivid recollection of the big earthquakes of 1855 as well as of the trouble with the Maoris. Her husband predeceased her ten years ago, and a family of four sons and three daughters survive her. They are Messrs. John Eaton (Carterton), George (Masterton), Thomas and Charles (Longbush), Mesdames A. King (Carterton), Coleman (Hamilton), W. Renall (Parkvale). A son and a daughter predeceased her some years ago. During the evening service at St. Mark''s Church on Sunday, the Rev. W. F. Stent made reference to the passing of Mrs. Eaton. She had, he said, set an example of duty and seryice in pioneering which had helped to make New Zealand what it is to-day.
