John Hooper was born/christened on 23 July 1805. In 1825 he married Jane Ann THOMAS and together they had five children, the second child dying at the age of three. Jane died June Quarter 1838 and on 12 March 1839 John married Caroline WADMAN (b Sept 10th 1815). They had one child, William Wadman Hooper, before leaving on the "Arab" for New Zealand. John and Caroline settled at Te Marua where they raised their family - in total 17 children. John died on December 25th 1892 in Taita and Caroline died 11 years later on June 16th 1903 in Sanson. Both John and Caroline are buried in the famous Churchyard at Christ Church, Taita.

The death is announced of Mr. John (sic) Whiteman, aged 77. Deceased had resided in the Hutt Valley for 64 years, having arrived there with his father, brother, and sister in 1842, when he was but fourteen years of age. In the troublous times of the Maori uprising deceased joined the militia and fought against Te Rauparaha and others whose bloody deeds awakened feelings of horror throughout the colony and elsewhere. The militia to which Mr. Whiteman was attached fought from the vicinity of the Hutt Valley to Paikakariki (sic), and its neighbourhood, and he was one of the first to enter the barracks after the occasion upon which the Maoris lopped off the arms of a bugler lad who was sounding an alarm. Mr. Whiteman, who was born at Kent, England, in December, 1828, leaves five sons, the eldest of whom is Councillor Whiteman, of the Hutt County Council.

One of the sons lives in the Wairarapa, but all the others are resident in the Hutt Valley. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at the Church of England Cemetery, Trentham.
