West Coast Times 18 December 1889
Quite a gloom was cast over the town last night when it became known that Mr C. S. Emerson, the Town Clerk, was dead. For some years Mr Emerson had been in the most delicate health, and it soon became evident that he was slowly dying of consumption. He himself was aware of this and attributed it to overtraining for athletics, as at one time he was strong and healthy. Whilst in Wellington in the Union Bank the strain was too great for him, he was obliged to resign his position. He afterwards came to this town and was elected to the position of Town Clerk, a post which he held with great credit to himself and the welfare of the Borough. In his private life he was greatly liked and enlisted the sympathies of all by his genial, though quiet and unassuming, manner. His illness he bore throughout with the utmost patience, for it is only those who were once strong and vigorous that feel so acutely the inroads of a disease which every day leaves them weaker than the day before. The deceased gentleman was also a prominent mason and took great interest in the doings of the craft. Great sympathy is felt for Mrs Emerson and her family in their sad and untimely bereavement.
