OBITUARY.
MR WILLIAM BAYLY.
Death has removed another of the pioneer settlers from our midst in the person of Mr William Bayly, who died at his residence, Te Marama, in the Bell Block district, about 7 o''clock on Sunday evening. The deceased gentleman had attained to 68 years. For some time Mr Bayly had been afflicted with asthma, which kept him indoors at periods but during the last year or so his health became worse, and for some time prior to his demise Mr Bayly had been confined to his house. It was for the purpose of getting further inland to benefit his health that Mr Bayly removed from his residence at Te Henui, near the sea, to Te Marama.
The deceased gentleman was one of the early settlers of this district, having come out here with his parents in the Amelia Thompson, the second vessel to bring settlers to New Plymouth. His parents came from Devonshire, and when the family landed here Mr Bayly was a small boy. Like most of the early settlers Mr Bayly followed farming and dealing pursuits when he became old enough to take his part in the battle of life. When the Maori rebellion broke out Mr Bayly, in common with the other settlers, had to take his share in the defence of his adopted home, and at the battle of Waireka, on March 28th, 1860, he received a bullet in his shoulder, which was never extracted and which he carried to his dying day.
In the "sixties" Mr Bayly made a trip to Great Britain and the Continent, going by the old Panama route.
About 1878 he started a butchering business in New Plymouth, and worked up a large connection. For some years past he has had no less than three shops — the Central, West end, and East End Meat Bazaars. Being a big land owner in north Taranaki, especially in the Okato, Warea, and Rahotu districts, Mr Bayly was enabled to fatten stock for his own shops.
The deceased gentleman had in his time taken a part in local politics, and was Mayor of the Borough of New Plymouth during the years 1881, 1882, 1883, 1886, and 1887.
He was married twice. His first wife was Miss Hay, there being one child of the marriage, Miss B. Bayly. His second wife was Miss Hill, of Nelson, who survives him. There are four children of the second marriage - Mrs A. Hempton, Misses C. and B. Bayly, and Mr W. Bayly.
