Some of our readers will be interested to learn that Mr George Hedges (formerly of Sandon), is at present a prominent member of the Timaru Parliamentary Union. He has introduced a bill dealing with special settlements. This is a question which his experience in connexion with the Small Farm Association in the Sandon district should render Mr Hedges well qualified to discuss.

THE LATE ME HEDGES
The many friends of Mr George Hedges will learn with deep regret that his death took place early yesterday morning at his residence, Woollcoombe street, The late Mr Hedges had been ill for several weeks, suffering from a painful internal complaint, but it was only last week that his medical attendant gave no hope of his recovery. The deceased was a very old colonist, having arrived in Wellington about 89 years ago. He was in business in the Hutt district for about 20 years, and than removed to the Sandon district, Rangitikei. During his lengthy stay in the North Island Mr Hedges pursued his calling of a basket maker, but also took a wide interest in social and other matters, being a very prominent volunteer in the then stirring times, first as a private and later on as an officer. About 11 years ago Mr Hedges came to South Canterbury, and at one time did an extensive business in his trade. He had shown a good deal of enterprise in the growing of willow rods, hoping to set up an export trade, but his hopes of a profitable business in this direction proved vain. In the North Island, where he experienced many of the ups and downs of the early colonists. Mr Hedges was a staunch adherent of the Church of England. In Timaru, he had long been a vestryman of St Mary''s Church, and a teacher in the Sunday school, and in both capacities he was most assiduous and earnest in his attention to his duties. He leaves a widow and five sons and three daughters, all of whom are grown up, to mourn the loss of a good father. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, when a service will be held at St Mary''s Church.

Timaru Herald 13 June 1894
The funeral of the late Mr George Hedges took place yesterday afternoon, and was well attended by the officers of St. Mary''s Church, and the deceased''s numerous friends. The service at the church was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Harper, and the lessons were read by the Rev Mr Cocks. Hymns for the dead, 290 and 288, were sung, and the Dead March in Saul was played on the organ by the Mr Gooch. The services at the church and at the grave were most attentively listened to.
