New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator 10 July 1841
WE, the undersigned Emigrants by the Katherine Stewart Forbes, are desirous to convey our warmest gratitude to Captain Hobbs for the anxious solicitude evinced by him for our safety, during a tedious and perilous voyage from England to New Zealand. We are the more desirous of testifying our sense of his kindness, because he had in many instances interposed when others in a minor charge attempted to destroy our peace and quiet. We would also add that the discipline and seamanship displayed by Captain Hobbs has entirely secured our respect and admiration.
We also tender our thanks to the chief and second mates, for their united civility and kindness during the voyage.

Wellington Independent 24 August 1867
Accident. — A very serious accident occurred to Mr Matthew Gaskin, an old and respected settler of the Taita, on the 13th inst, as he was returning from Wellington. When about a mile from his home, his horse suddenly took fright, and, while endeavoring to stop the furious animal, he was knocked down, the wheel of the cart passing over his left leg, crushing the bone and severely injuring the blood vessels, thereby stopping the circulation. Dr Wilford, of the Hutt, was promptly in attendance, but, despite the utmost medical skill, it became necessary to amputate the fractured limb, which operation was most skilfully and successfully performed by Drs Wilford and France. Mr Gaskin is now progressing very favorably.

Wellington Independent 28 September 1867
Death of Mr Gaskin. — We regret to announce that the accident to Mr Matthew Gaskin, which we noticed six weeks ago, has had a fatal result. Mr Gaskin was a member of the Taita Rifle Volunteers, and on Tuesday last was buried with all the military honors to which he was entitled. The Hutt Volunteer Band, under their very able conductor, Mr Valentine, was in attendance, and played the "Dead March in Saul." The deceased was followed to his grave by the members of his corps, and a large number of relatives and other persons anxious to show their respect, amongst whom were Captain Stack, Inspector of Musketry, Captain and Adjutant Cleland, Capts. Beetham, Whitewood and Mills, and several subaltern officers of the Hutt and Taita corps. The whole ceremony formed a most impressive scene, such as was never before witnessed in the Hutt.
