Mr James William Fox, farmer, of Rongotea, died suddenly at his residence yesterday morning.
Wanganui Chronicle 23 February 1916
Mr. James William Fox, farmer, of Rongotea, died suddenly yesterday morning. It is supposed that deceased took some liniment in mistake for a cough remedy.
Wanganui Chronicle 29 February 1916
MISTAKEN CAUSE OF DEATH.
It was stated a day or two ago that Mr. J. W. Fox, a well known farmer of Rangotea, had died suddenly at Palmerston North, owing, it was believed, to the drinking of some imiment in mistake for a cough mixture. The adjourned inquest to inquire into the circumstance of the death, was held at Palmerston Court House on Saturday, by Mr. J. W. Poyntor S.M., District Coroner, and there expert evidence given showed that the deceased, in stating that he had taken, liniment, must have done so under a delusion at the time.
Dr. Bett stated that he made a post mortem examination of the deceased on 23rd instant at the hospital. Witness examined the contents of deceased''s stomach, but found no traces of the liniment he was supposed to have swallowed. The heart and kidneys were affected, and the vessels of the brain were congested. He body was will nourished. There was a slight abrasion on the face, but no trace of any poison in the saliva in the mouth. Death in witness''s opinion resulted from dilation of the heart due to cirrhosis of the kidneys.
Leslie Fox, son of deceased, said on the Sunday evening his father was in his usual health and spirits. Early next morning he came into witness''s room. He was then groaning and seemed very unwell and lay down on witness''s bed. Witness then called his brother Charles.
Charles Fox said when he went into his brother''s room he found his father doubled up and groaning. Dr. Watson was called up from Bulls, and he ordered deceased to the Palmerston Hospital, where he arrived between eight and nine o''clock in the morning. He died the same day. A bottle of liniment had been moved from its usual plane in the kitchen during Sunday night, and his father may have mistaken it for the bottle of cough mixture which he was taking at the time.
The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
