Additional Information The Battle of the Scarpe: On September 4th [1918] the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, as Divisional reserve, moved to the area between Favreuil and Fremicourt, reconnoitring parties going east as far as Bertincourt to keep battalions informed as to the ever-changing situation. Transport lines and quartermasters'' stores were brought up to the north side of Bapaume.The 2nd Brigade having taken Neuville on the 5th September, completed its fine work by capturing Metz-en-Couture and clearing Havrincourt Wood by dawn on the 7th. (The Official History of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade by Lt.Col. W.S. Austin)
New Zealand lost 18,166 service men and women, out of a population of approximately 1,089,825, in World War I. Nearly all those killed were buried overseas - 5325 New Zealanders have no known grave.

The Masterton correspondent of The Post telegraphs: Cable advice was received last night announcing the death in action on 5th September of Captain Aubrey Jackson, who left with the 14th Reinforcements. Captain Jackson was in the employ of G. W. Perry and Co., Masterton when he enlisted. He was born in Carterton, and was forty-four years of age. For many years he had taken a prominent interest in Territorial matters, and held a commission in the 17th Ruahine Regiment.
