Evening Post 13 June 1889
Sudden Death of Mr. William Ebden.
A terribly sudden death ocourred at Pipitea Point this morning, Mr. William Ebden, a very well-known and early settler in Wellington, falling dead at his residence. Mr. Ebdon had been ailing for some time past, but was not altogether an invalid, and could get about. He rose at about halfpast 7 o''clock this morning, and came downstairs, but shortly after returned to his bedroom, when he was heard to fall. It was thought he had been seized with a fit, and the assistance of a neighbour was first called in, and afterwards Dr. Cahill was sent for. Previous to the doctor''s arrival, all possible restoratives were used, but without success, and the doctor was of opinion that death must have ocourred instantaneously. Tho body was subsequently removed to the Morgue, where a post mortem will precede the inquest, which is to take place at 4 o''clock this afternoon. The cause of death is supposed to be heart disease. The deceased gentleman owns considerable property at Pipitea, and leaves a wife to mourn her loss. He had no family.

Evening Post 14 June 1889
It was clearly proved by Dr. Cahill at the inquest held yesterday afternoon upon the body of Mr. William Ebden, whose sudden death was referred to yesterday, that the cause of death was syncope, the result of fatty degeneration of the heart. The doctor said that a post mortem examination had revealed the fact that the deceased suffered from old-standing pleurisy and inflammation of the right lung. The heart and pericardium also showed signs of inflammation and calcareous degeneration. The deceased, it appears from the evidence of Miss Elizabeth A. Preston, companion of Mrs. Ebden, was active right up to the time of his death (sic), and had not complained previously of illness. Tho evening previous he had attended a meeting. Shortly before he died he complained of feeling very cold, and had been so all night, Death occurred a few minutes after his falling down upon the bedroom floor. Henry Parker, a neighbour, who had been called in to assist, also gave evidence. The jury, of whom Mr. James Trevor was the foreman, returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. The deceased was 69 years of age.
