Particulars of the accident in the bush at Pahiatua on Thursday last, which caused the death of William Eaton, have just reached the police. It appears that the deceased with his mate, John Sage, was falling bush for a settler named Anderson. About half a chain from a tree upon which they were engaged stood another tree on which they had operated upon the previous night, putting in a scarf, and then felling another one upon it. The tree, however, did not come down, but after splitting down to the stump remained a fixture. On the morning of the accident both men looked at this tree, but did not think it in a dangerous state. They had been working only a short time when the deceased called out that the tree was falling. Sage succeeded in getting clear away from it, and the deceased had also plenty of time, but was apparently struck by the barrel, and his right shoulder and leg were smashed to pulp. He died a few minutes afterwards, in the arms of his brother and Sage. An inquest was held at Pahiatua on Friday, before Mr. A. Reese, J.P., when the jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death. The deceased was 24 years of age, unmarried, and he and his brothers had only recently taken up six or seven hundred acres of bush land in the Mangahao block, intending to settle upon it.
