MILK ADULTERATION
Alexander Doull, for whom Mr E. P. Bunny appeared, was charged at Lower Hutt Court, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M to-day, with selling milk containing 7 per cent, of added water. Formal evidence was given by John Lerwell, Inspector under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. For the defence, Mr. Bunny called Mr. H. A. Ward, an ex-inspector of dairies and secretary and manager of the Wellington Dairy Farmers Association, who gave evidence regarding the good character of defendant, and said it was not possible for dairymen to make a test of their morning''s milk, as, before this could be done, the milk had to be five hours'' old. Also that the lactometers were not reliable.
The Magistrate said that an offence had been committed, but that it was rather a difficult matter to arrive at the penalty, as all cases were not equal. Defendant''s reputation must be taken into consideration. This was evidently an isolated offence. Defendant would be fined £3, with 17s 6d costs.
R. August, similarly charged, with selling milk having 5 per cent added water, pleaded guilt, Mr. Bunny again calling Mr. Ward, who gave defendant an excellent character. A fine of £3 and 17s 6d costs was recorded.
George Mitchell was charged with selling milk having 18 per cent, of added water, and was convicted and fined £7 with 7s costs.
