Pioneer''s home could be bowled for townhouses
by Lee-Ann Edwards
One of Lower Hutt''s original homes is up for auction on Thursday.
The house, at 884 High Street, is one of the last of the genuine, unaltered pioneer homes built in the Valley in the 1840s. It may even be the oldest house in Lower Hutt, says local historian George Kaye.
Descendants of early settlers John and Eliza Daysh, who are believed to have built the cottage in the early 1840s, are concerned about the possible fate of the building.
Belmont resident Ron Powell and his sister Christina, the great, great grandchildren of the Daysh''s, would like to see the cottage preserved and restored in the manner of Upper Hutt''s Golder''s Cottage and Pauatahanui''s TaylorStace Cottage.
The pair fear that the prime site will be snapped up by a developer looking for room for townhouses, or that the pioneer home will be so altered that its links with history will be largely destroyed.
Previous Daysh family descendants had believed the family home was in Walters Street and that it was demolished in 1962. But recent evidence seems to point to the High Street house as being the correct site for John and Eliza''s home.
"We are 99.9 percent sure that the cottage on the corner of High and Daysh Streets is the one that our great, great grandparents built and lived in," Mr Powell says.
John Daysh came out to New Zealand on the Gertrude in 1842 with his wife and six children. A further eight children were born here in later years. The family settled in the Hutt Valley, farming on land now occupied by Naenae College.
The cottage is believed to have been built between 1843-45; pre-dating Christ Church in Taita by 11 years.

The Totara logs used to built Christ Church were donated by John Daysh.
"Even if it''s not the Daysh cottage it is still a very historic place and it would be great to be able to preserve it," Mr Powell say.
A representative from the Historic Place Trust has met the Powells, who say that although the trust seemed interested in the cottage, it would take eight of nine months to put a classification on the building.
Christina Powell says that previous city councils have missed a golden opportunity to save the property for future generations.
"Back in 1958 Percy Dowse said publicly that the house was definitely worthy od preservation but unfortunately nothing was done."
The Powell''s say they don''t have the money to buy the house and wer hoping that, "a saviour with money and an interest in pioneering history will miraculously turn up in the next few days. Otherwise our only hope is that this council can somehow manage to buy it."
Hutt City Council officers were late week looking into the possibility of ''rescuing'' the cottage.
Mayor Glen Evans says that although he considers it a good idea to purchase the house na d perhaps move it to council land, finding the money in such a short time-frame presents problems. "But I think it would be a good idea as it is part of the city''s heritage."
Hopes of the Silverstream Historic Village Society buying the building were dashed when society president Keith Davis said that although the society would love to have the house, "... realistically speaking it is out of our reach at the moment".
The real estate agent handling the sale, Alex McRae, says there has been considerable interest in the property since it went on the market.
"We''ve had everyone from builders wanting to re-develop, to young couples with an eye to doing the house up and living in it."

Founders Society
By Adele Pentony-Graham
THE Wairarapa branch of the Founders Society held its first outing of the year on Waitangi Day at the magnificent Daysh House in West Taratahi.
This is one of our local Heritage Houses and has a lake in front of the property, with wild-fowl under the trees, and a punt moored on the bank.
The gardens are superb, lovely to stroll through, and we were allowed to view the interior of the house.
The house has been restored gracefully and has many original features, even down to a cabinet under the stairway - possible made from local native timber.
Alfred Daysh, son of John Ings Daysh, owned the house. Born in Taita in 1854, Alfred married Elizabeth Sage in 1876 and they had a large family.
The couple are both buried in Clareville.
The Wairarapa branch of the Founders Society is holding their annual meeting at Masterton Croquet Club rooms in Queen Elizabeth Park on March 18 at 1.30pm.
All welcome.

Otago Daily Times 13 January 1897
This district (says a Palmerston North paper) boasts of what probably no other part of the colony can — viz., five living generations of one family. At the head is Mr J. Daysh, of Taratahi, who, although he is 92 years old, is still hale and hearty. He came out in the second or third boat of pioneer settlers in 1840. Mrs John Rayner is his daughter, and is 63 years of age. One of her daughters married a Mr George Gaskin, whose daughter again is the wife of Mr W. Knowles, and their five-month-old son is a great-great-grandson to Mr Daysh. They are all enjoying good health.
