Evening Post 18 June 1934
Mr. George Cudby, a well-known resident of Lower Hutt, died yesterday aged 72.
The late Mr. Cudby was a son of Mr. John Cudby, who arrived in New Zealand in 1843. When the settlement of Britannia at the mouth of the Hutt River, approximately on the site where Petone how stands, was broken up Mr Cudby''s father settled in Lower Hutt where he established a very considerable business as carter and contractor. He was employed to supply provisions to the troops at Boulcott''s Farm, and was so engaged at the time of Rangihaeata''s raid in 1858, arriving at the scene after the raiders had been driven off. It was on this occasion that the heroic incident in connection with Bugler Allen occurred. Mr. George Cudby was born on April 18, 1862, and he took on the business of contractor on his father''s death, and also the coaching business, conveying passengers to and from the trains at the Hutt. He was present with his father at the opening of the railway line from Wellington to Lower Hutt in 1874 and was engaged with his father in the levelling of the site for the railway station at Lower-Hutt.
Although he served, on no local bodies mostly on account of his being engaged in contracts with them, Mr. Cudby took an active part in movements connected with the development of the district and was especially active in support of the formation of the River Board in 1898. In the realm of sport he was very interested in racing, and at the time of his death was a life member of the Wellington Racing Club. He was also a member of the Hutt Gun Club. In 1914 he left for Rangiora and was engaged in the hotel and brewery business. He continued his interest in sport and was vice-president of the North Canterbury Gun Club, and president of the North Canterbury Racing Club. He retired in 1927, and after residing two years in Christchurch he returned to Lower Hutt and lived with his daughter, Mrs. Devlin. During his residence at Lower Hutt he was a prominent-member of the Hutt Bowling Club. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. J. Devlin, Lower Hutt and Mrs. A. B. Johnson, Rangiora.
