OBITUARY
MRS. M. L. WELSBY.
Another link with the early days has been severed in the passing of Mrs. M. Louisa Welsby at the family residence, Marion Street, after a long period of ill health. Mrs. Welsby was born at Rochdale, Lancashire, England, and was the eldest surviving daughter of the late Rev. Henry Clere, M.A., and Mrs. Ellen Clere, the authoress, coming to New Zealand with her people in the ship Hurunui in 1877. She was educated in England, France, and Germany, and was an accomplished pianist and soloist, and also gifted in languages. Mrs. Welsby was a true English-gentlewoman, retaining the early English customs right to the end. She was a lady with the highest sense of home duty, never seeking publicity and being always a true lover of home life. In 1880 she married Mr. John Welsby, civil engineer, son of the late Mr. Thomas Welsby, of Chester, England, at St. Paul''s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, and is survived by four daughters, Mrs. E. Engstrom (Masterton), the Misses Della, Zoe, and Nina Welsby, and one son, Mr. Vaughan Welsby, formerly of New York, but now resident in New Zealand, and also by two sisters, Mrs. Temple Frere (Kent, England) and Mrs. H. Willans (Day''s Bay), and one brother Mr. F. de Jersey Clere, of Wellington. There are four grandchildren and three-great-grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her fifteen years ago, and two sons in more recent years. Mrs. Welsby died on the anniversary of the death of her son Dr. Claude B. Welsby, and much sympathy is felt for her family and relatives. A service was conducted at St. Peter''s Church by the Ven. Archdeacon Bullock, who also officiated at the graveside, the pall-bearers being Mr. Vaughan Engstrom (grandson), Mr. Eric Clere (nephew), Mr. J. Ellis, Mr. E. Fitzgerald Eagar, Mr. Upchurch, and Mr. Fitchett.
