Schools shocked by pupils'' death in tramping mishap
The deaths of two Stokes Valley schoolboys and their father in a tramping tragedy in the Tararua ranges at the weekend has shocked their respected schools.
The bodies of Ian Garth Berry, 14, Grant Richard Berry, 11, and their father Richard Sam Berry, 41, were found by a tramper in the Atiwhakatu Stream near Mt Holdsworth late yesterday.
Peter Gunn, principal of Stokes Valley School at which Grant was a standard four pupil, said the school was very upset at the news.
Mr Gunn said Grant was very quiet, serious boy. He was well liked by everyone and was intensely interested in the outdoors.
"I guess it would be a situation that we find very hard because they were a family who had a keen interest in tramping and outdoor pursuits. Their father was known for his tramping and outdoor skill."
Mr Gunn said the older students were "heavily affected" by Grant''s death as it was one of a series of deaths of children recently associated with the school.
"The standard four pupils are specially upset because they have only just returned from an outdoor education course."
"Horrendous" is how Taita College principal Bob Wilson described third former Ian Berry''s death.
Mr Wilson said losing a student, specially a third former, was "quite devasting."
"You know, a young life, he had just started his school career and now it''s gone.
"The great thing about him was he was reliable and dependable. You could give him a task to do and know he would finish it."
Mr Wilson said Ian''s class was shaken.
