Otago Witness 17 December 1881
This morning the wife of one of the oldest settlers passed away, in the 55th year of her age, We allude to Mrs Harriet Bentley, who arrived in Otago in 1848, in the ship John Wickliffe. She moved in a humble sphere but there are few women, indeed, who are blessed with a kindlier heart, and by whom benevolent acts are more un-ostentatiously performed. Having resided here since the early days she was well known, and those who knew her best respected her most, on account of her estimable "qualities." The Bentley family resided in Dunedin for several years, and many old identities will read the above with regret.

We regret having to record the death of Mr. Charles Bentley, of Ngahauranga, one of the pioneers of Otago, but who has been settled in this district for the last seven years. Mr. Bentley came to the colony in the John Wickliffe with one of the first parties of settlers in Otago, and in the early goldfield days was engaged as a carrier and contractor on the diggings, in which occupation he accumulated considerable means. The closing days of his life have been spent with his sons at Ngahauranga.

North Otago Times 8 December 1896
A Wellington telegram says that the death is announced of Mr Charles Bentley, of Ngahurauga, one of the pioneers of Otago, but who has bean settled in this district for the last seven years. Mr Bentley came to the colony in the John Wickliffe, with one of the first parties of settlers in Otago, and in the early goldfields days was engaged as carrier and contractor on the diggings, in which occupation he accumulated considerable means. The closing days of his life have been spent with his sons at Ngahuranga. We may mention that Mr Bentley was an Oamaru resident for some years, and removed from this place to Timaru, and thence to the North Island. Mr Bentley was a well-known citizen of Dunedin when that town consisted of a few houses, and there he lived till his sons removed to other places, when he went with them. We cannot give Mr Bentley''s age, but it must have been close upon 90 at the time of his death.

Timaru Herald 12 December 1896
BENTLEY.- At Wellington, on the 4th inst., Charles Bentley, father of Mrs. W. Collins, Woodbury; aged 76. (Arrived in Otago by the John Wycliffe in 1848.)
