Biography
Avery, George, Junr., Farmer, Brightfield Farm, about three miles from Pahiatua. Bankers, Bank of New Zealand. Mr. George Avery is the second son of Mr. George Avery, of the Hutt, and was born at Taita in 1853. He received his early education there, and was brought up on his father''s farm. Removing to Pahiatua some years ago, he took up the present property of 477 acres. The farm was then bush and scrub, with hardly enough grass to feed a horse. The land, however, was soon cleared and sown with English grass, and is now a splendid dairying and sheep farm. The cowsheds are kept in perfect order, and about 130 cows are milked daily. Mr. Avery has taken no active interest in public affairs, but has given his whole time and energy to developing his farm. He is a director of the Pahiatua Farmers'' Co-operative Association. His residence at the farm is a new villa of eight rooms, and is situated close to the main road. He is married, and has a family of ten children.

DIVORCE.
At the Supreme Court this morning, before his Honor Judge Edwards, the case of George Avery (Mr Barnicoat) v. Sarah Elizabeth Avery (Mr Gully) and James Donald Wilson (Mr Skerrett) was called on.
The following jury was empannelled - Messrs C. Harris, J. G. McLean, R. G. McLean, E. Kiernan, J. Cray, J Walsh, G. Benson, F. O. Wallace, A Emeny, J. C. Mailman, R. Cooper, and P. H. Forster. The latter was chosen as foreman. Mr Barnicoat said the suit was brought by George Avery, late of Pahiatua and now living at Kaponga, who sought divorce from his wife on the ground of her adultery with James Donald Wilson, of Pahiatua. The case in many respects was a very sad one. The parties were married in 1876, when they were both young, Mr Avery being 22 and his wife 18. They had ten children, who were now living, the eldest (married) being 22 years of age and the youngest 6. The eldest daughter was 16 years old. Though they had a very large family, both the parents were in the prime of life. For the principal part of their married life they lived at Pahiatua, where Mr Avery had a farm, and did very well as a farmer. The course of their married life ran fairly smoothly for upwards of 20 years, no-thing approaching anything of a serious nature occurring during that long period, and he was quite prepared to admit that during this long time Mrs Avery was, on the whole, a faithful mother and wife. The change in her demeanor and conduct they dated to a time when she became acquainted wilh Mr and Mrs Wilson. Mr Wilson was a carpenter in a successful way of business, living at Pahiatua, and was at present Mayor of the town. The Avery first became acquainted with the Wilson family in 1890. They resided about 2 1/2 miles from Pahiatua, and a strong friendship sprang up between them Mrs Avery visited the Wilsons frequently and developed a great friendship for Mr Wilson. From that time Mrs Avery''s conduct and demeanor towards her husband changed. She was a middle-aged woman, and began to be rather flighty, attending dances and never losing an opportunity of meeting Mr Wilson. In time she began to neglect her home, and became estranged from her children. Although Mrs Avery behaved in a strange manner towards her husband he did not distrust her till December 1897, when his suspicious were aroused, and he charged his wife with keeping company with Mr Wilson. She admitted this, and said she had deceived her husband, who might do anything he liked to her, and even turn her out. Both she and Wilson at first stoutly denied any impropriety, but subsequently the former confessed. Mr Avery had in the meantime gone to Kaponga, with a view of taking his wife and family away from Pahiatua associations. Mrs Avery had approached him with a view to reconciliation, but for the honor of his family and the consequent estrangement he felt it was too much to ask, and had decide to commence the divorce proceedings. Mr Barnicoat concluded by stating that there were counter charges of cruelty and adultery, but he would leave that to his learned friends on the other side to prove. The case is proceeding as we go to press.
