MR. J. S. AUGUST DEAD
The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Thursday of Mr. John Samuel August, late of Lower Hutt, in his 87th year. Mr. August was keenly interested in trotters for 50 years, and drove in races till he was well over 70. He was born at Ngahauranga, and took up farming. Later he leased the Black Horse Hotel in Christchurch, and then acquired the Islington Arms, which he sold about 25 years ago.
Mr. August owned a large number of trotters, including King''s Clere and Black Child, the best trotter of his time (about 30 years ago). Others to race with success in his colours included Sleeve Link, Mary Child, and Child Abdullah.
Mr. August''s wife predeceased him about two years ago. There are four sons living, Messrs. E. J. August, Christchurch, W. G. August, Auckland, J. E. August, Lower Hutt, president of the Wellington Trotting Club, and S. M. August, Auckland. Another son, Mr. H. L. August, died about eighteen months ago

Pantry Tea
Recently Mrs J. E. August and Mrs. H. Haden were joint hostesses at a pantry tea held at Mrs. August''s residence, "Aroha", White''s Line West. The afternoon was given in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Jean Garner to Mr. George Burton. Mrs. August, wearing navy blue and white floral crepe de chine, received the guests. Mrs. Haden wore bottle-green silk marocain, Miss Garner, navy blue with white accessories, Mrs H. Garner, brown and white figured crepe de chine, Miss Stella August, navy blue with pink tonings; Miss Joy August, cream and navy checked linen costume; Miss R. Burton, blue with red accessories.
A most enjoyable afternoon was spent with competitions and musical items, Miss Francis Clout entertained with vocal solos, accompanied by Miss J. August at the piano. A delicious afternoon tea was served, after which Miss Garner opened her parcels and thanked all those present for the numerous gifts. Friends present were: Mesdames R. Fulton, T. Barker, H. Clark, G. Peck, D. Moyes, R. Elbe, Clout, Brodie, Rasmusson, Armstrong, Keyes, Warburton, Saulbury, Lukins, Nickless (Wanganui), August senr., Misses V. Trevethick, M. Fulton, N. Roberts, F. Clout, E. Armstrong, L. Armstrong, Z. Keyes, J. Clout.

Another pleasant evening, with Miss Jean Garner as guest of honour, was given by Miss Rona Burton, 55 Penrose Street. Competitions were won by Misses S. August, M. Trevethick, A. Kilminster, J. Garner. Miss Garner open her many personal gifts and thanked everyone, after which followed a delightful supper. Among those present were Mrs Burton, Mrs. H. Garner, Misses S. August, J. August, J. Guthrie, A. Wyatt, A. Kilminster, M. Trevethick, V. Trevethick, J. Lines, N. Burton and L. Orvis.

Mr. J. E. AUGUST
A well-known resident of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. E. August, died last week at the age of 60 years.
Mr. August was a steward and a member of the committee of the Wellington Trotting Club continuously from 1910 till the time of his death. He was elected president of the club in 1931. Failing health was a factor in causing him to retire the presidency in 1945. He was foundation member and past president of the Woburn Bowling Club. He was alao a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. L. E. August, and two daughters, Mrs. S. E. Smith and Mrs. I. J. Winyard.
