FATALITY BY DROWNING.
(Special to Daily Times.)
A sad drowning fatality occurred yesterday at Mr T. J. Rathbone''s Admiral sawmill, the victim being a young married man named George Burnett, aged 36 (sic). Deceased was employed at the mill as teamster aud with Mr Sexton, was taking a number of horses to bath in the river a few chains from the mill. Burnett rode into the water on one horse, and led another. The latter pulled back and unseated him, and in being thrown he was severely kicked by the struggling animals. The commotion clouded the water and Burnett, who is believed not to have been a swimmer, sank out of sight in a depth of about twenty feet. Sexton aud others immediately went to the rescue, and made several attempts to bring Burnett out, but, owing to the difficulties presented by the formation of the river-bed, were unable to recover the body before life was extinct.
The deceased had only been employed at the mill since December, and was well known north of Masterton, having at one time conducted a livery stable at Dannevirke. He was a son of Mrs Burnett, senr., of Belvedere, and was generally respected. Seven years ago he married Miss Elliott, of Mauriceville, who survives him with two children, aged respectively three months and five years.
The inquest will be held at Carterton, this afternoon, at four o''clock, before Mr W. P. James, S.M.

CARTERTON, This Day.
An inquest was held yesterday on the body of George S. B. Burnett, who was drowned at Admiral Run on Sunday. It appears that deceased and a man named, Sexton, wagoners at Admiral sawmill, were engaged swimming their horses in Wainuioru River to wash them. Neither could swim, and both, who were on horseback, fell into a hole 16 feet deep. Deceased was washed, off his horse, and sank, but rose again. John Bassett, standing on the river bank, saw his predicament, and though fully clad jumped in to the rescue. Bassett is a poor swimmer, and on reaching deceased was grabbed and pulled underneath the water. He shook off the grip and rose to the surface, but deceased did not reappear. The body was recovered three houre later by fishing with hooked lines. A verdict was returned of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone. Deceased was 36 (sic) years of age, and leaves a widow and two young children.
