William was eight when he first attended school at Manauau and then stayed on as a pupil teacher. He also taught at Taita School. He married Alice Buck. He then taught at various schools including Thames and Picton and retired as headmaster at Upper Hutt after 43 years of teaching. He then moved to Hastings to lived and he died in 1968.

Veteran bowlers death

Hawke''s Bay''s best known veteran bowler, Mr William Dacre (Bill) Bennett, died in Napier on Saturday, aged 89. Mr Bennett was born at Crofton near Marton, and he received his education at the Manakau School, Otaki, when he father moved to that area to take up farming.
Mr Bennett stayed on at the school as pupil teacher after completing his own education and taught at a number of schools in the district during his 43 years as a teacher. He retired from teaching in 1937 and moved to Hastings with his wife, formerly Miss Alice Buck.
Professional Runner
Always keen on sport, Mr Bennett was a professional runner in his youth and played cricket in the Wellington area until he was 50.
But bowling was his favourite sport and as a member of the Hastings Bowling Club he won the New Zealand singles title in 1938 and gained the Hawke''s Bay Bowling Centre''s gold star award for winning five centre titles.
He won the Hastings'' club singles title seven times and also had successes in pairs and fours events.
Tireless Figure
With his three sons he made up one of Hawke''s Bay''s most successful four teams, and this combination won a Webber Shield Tournament.
On another occasion Mr Bennett also skipped a winning combination in this event.
Despite his years, Mr Bennett was a tireless figure on the bowling green and up till the time of his death maintained a keen interest in the sport. He had been a member of Port Ahuriri Club for the past five years.
Mr Bennett was predeceased by his wife. He leaves four sons, Messrs Hamilton (Napier), Cyril (Havelock North), Roger (Bay View) and Wilfred Bennett (Waiotira), and three daughters Myra (Mrs Windley, Levin), Hinemoa (Mrs Tracey (sic), Auckland) and Sylvia (Mrs Estcourt, Hastings). He also leaves 29 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren
