Wanganui Herald 26 March 1904
Our readers will learn with real regret of the death of Mrs J. C. Brechin, who passed away at her residence at 9 o''clock last evening, in her 62nd year. The deceased lady, who was a daughter of the late Mr George Brown, of Upper Hutt, was born in Paisley, and came to the colony with her parents as long ago as 1855. Mrs Brechin was an old resident of Wauganui, having been almost 40 years here. She was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Mrs Brechin was of a quiet nature, and her kindly disposition, endeared her to all with whom she was brought in contact. Mr Brechin and the members of the family two sons and two daughters will have the deep sympathy of the community in their bereavement. The funeral takes place on Monday afternoon.

Wanagnaui Herald 29 March 1904

Ferguson and W. Bruce (elders of St. Paul''s Presbyterian Church) were the pall-bearers. The solemn service at the grave-side was impressively conducted by the Rev. R. M. Ryburn.

OBITUARY.
MR. J. C. BRECHIN.
The Great Reaper''s sickle has been busily employed in the Wanganui district during the past few months, and men and women who have for many years been identified with the public life have been garnered home. To-day it is our sad duty to record the passing of the oldest resident of Wanganui. We refer to Mr. John C. Brechin, who passed away yesterday at the advanced age of 95 years. The deceased gentleman, who was born at Hamilton, Scotland, arrived in Melbourne in 1853, whence he came to New Zealand in 1862, settling in Wanganui two years later. He became associated with the drapery business in Wicksteed Street conducted by the late Mrs. Hogg, and subsequently became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Hogg Bros. and Brechin, who removing to the Avenue, to the site now occupied by Messrs. George and Kersley, conducted for many years "Ayrshire House." There was perhaps no more familiar figure in Wanganui than Mr Brechin, who despite his great age, made it a practice to go into town every day. There certainly was no one more highly esteemed, for the late Mr. Brechin endeared himself to all who knew him. Though he did not take any active part in local politics, the deceased gentleman was keenly interested in all that affected the welfare of the community. He was a man of deep religions convictions, and from his earliest days strove to improve the material and spiritual condition, of his fellowmen. He strongly, believed that drink was one of the greatest foes of man, and he was a lifelong advocate of temperance. It was his boast that he had been a teetotaler all his life, and he was proud to exhibit his pledge-card, which he signed when a boy. The late Mr. Brechin was one of the oldest members of St. Paul''s Presbyterian Church, and for very many years was the senior elder. No matter what the state of the weather or his health, Mr. Brechin could be relied upon to be in his place in the church on Sundays, or at midweek meetings, and it was only recently, when the weight of years began to tell their tale, that he absented himself from his customary seat at the communion table. For many years he represented the church at the Presbytery and at the General Assembly.
Among his commercial interests, Mr. Brechin was a director of the "Wanganui Chronicle," the flag being flown at half-mast on the office yesterday, as a mark of respect to his memory. A family of four — Miss Brechin, Miss Jean Brechin, Mr. John D. Brechin (of Wanganui), and Mr. James Brechin (of Pahiatua) — are left to mourn their loss, and to them we extend our sincere sympathy. The funeral will leave the deceased''s late residence, 40, Plymouth Street, on Friday at 2.30 o''clock.
