SUCCESSFUL YEAR
UPPER HUTT DIVISION
The annual meeting of the Upper Hutt branch of the Women''s Division of the Farmers'' Union took place recently at Riverside Golf Club-house. The annual report showed continued steady progress, and the balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory position.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:— President, Mrs. H. Hawthorn; vice-presidents, Mesdames S. D. Morris. O. Collie, O. Browne, H. E. August; hon. secretary, Mrs. F. E. Scholes; assistant secretary, Mrs. J. Gorrie; hon. treasurer, Mrs. A. G. Mumby; advisory members, Mesdames J. Maher and W. H. Collett; housekeeping secretary, Mrs. O. Skon; Press correspondent, Mrs. Frank Whiteman; committee members, Mesdames W. A. Lindsay, H. Scholes, W. N. Clifford, Tyer, Ecob, and Morrison; provincial executive delegates, Mesdames Hawthorn, Morris, and Browne.
A beautiful posy of pom-pom dahlias, nerines, and maidenhair fern was presented to Mrs. Hawthorn and floral sprays to the retiring committee members. Presentations in recognition of valuable services rendered were made ito the hon. secretary, Mrs. F. E. Scholes, and the hon. treasurer, Mrs. A. G. Mumby; also to Mrs. W. H. Collett, for hospitality extended to the branch.
A prize for a putting competition was presented by the hostess, Mrs. J. Bentley, and won by Mrs. Tyer. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded her and Mrs. Bentley for the use of their golf house and grounds.
A successful bring and buy stall, in aid of the Upper Hutt carnival queen, was conducted by Mrs. H. E. August.

GOLDEN WEDDINGS
MR. AND MRS. JOHN BENTLEY,
TAITA
The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. John Bentley, host and hostess of the Riverside Golf Links, Taita, was celebrated recently in the Taita Hall. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends.
The parents of Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were among New Zealand''s early settlers, Mr. Bentley having arrived at Port Chalmers in the John Wickliffe in March, 1848. They had a family of nine, John being the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Wilds, Mrs. Bentley''s parents, arrived in Lyttelton in the Mystery in April, 1859. They had seven of a family, Mrs. Bentley being the fourth child.
Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were married at Wellington on January 1, 1892, by the Rev. J. J. Lewis, Mr. Bentley having come to the North Island to follow his trade as a builder. They have spent almost all their married life in the Hutt Valley, where Mr. Bentley was occupied with mixed and dairy farming.
They have four children, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, most of whom were present at the celebration. Mr. and Mrs. Bentley are members of the Hutt Valley branch of the Farmers'' Union, and the Wellington Dairy Farmers'' Association. They were among the promoters of the Taita Hall. Market Gardeners''. Ltd., the Wellington Trotting Club (of which Mr. Bentley has been a steward for 20 years), and the Petone Bowling Club.

MR. JOHN BENTLEY
The death occurred in Wellington on Sunday of Mr. John Bentley, at the age of 77. Mr. Bentley was a well-known resident of Lower Hutt, having resided in the Hutt Valley for the best part of 50 years. Although originally a builder by trade, Mr. Bentley went in for mixed and dairy farming, chiefly at Taita. He was a member of the Farmers'' Union and of the Wellington Dairy Farmers'' Association. He was also among the promoters of the Taita Hall, Market Gardeners, Ltd., the Wellington Trotting Club (of which he was a steward for 20 years), and the Petone Bowling Club. Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bentley celebrated their golden wedding. He is survived by three sons and a daughter, and there are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
