AND QUEEN
Messages of congratulation and the gathering of members of their family from all parts of the Dominion made the celebration on September 5 of the diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Bentley, of Humphries Street, Greytown, a happy one.
Considering their great age both enjoy fairly good health, Mr. Bentley was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bentley, who were with the first settlers to arrive at Port Chalmers in the ship John Wickcliffe in March 1848. Mr. Bentley was born at Dunedin on August 24. 1855. Mrs. Bentley was born at Teignmouth, Devonshire, England, on May 14, 1856 and arrived in Dunedin in the ship Charlotte Gladstone in February 1871.
Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were married at Oamaru on September 5, 1881, by the Rev. Mr. Todd. Mr. Bentley resided in Oamaru for 16 years, where he was engaged in work connected with the carrying and contracting arm of Williams and Bentley. About 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Bentley removed to Wellington, where Mr. Bentley joined the firm of Tyre and Co. as engineer of the tanning works for a period of seventeen years. He then became a member of the staff of the Wellington Meat Export Co., Ltd., serving with that firm for 16 years, when he retired During this period Mr. and Mrs. Bentley resided in Johnsonville. For the past 20 years Mr. and Mrs. Bentley have lived in Greytown.
There were five sons and one daughter. The surviving sons are Messrs. Arthur Bentley (Christchurch) and Walter Bentley (Auckland). The daughter is Mrs. Ernest Hicks, of Ngaio. Messages of congratulation were received from their Majesties the King and Queen, the Governor-General and Lady Newall, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash), the member of the district (Mr. Ben Roberts), the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Horton), and many other wellwishers in other parts of New Zealand.

BENTLEY.- The Friends of the late Edward Bentley are invited to attend his Funeral, which will leave St. Luke''s Church, Greytown, Tomorrow (Saturday), September 19, 1942, at 2 p.m., after a short service, for the Greytown Cemetery. H. Trotman. Funeral Director, Greytown.
