MR. C. A. BAKER
Mr. Charles Alexander Baker, J.P., a well-known land agent of Wellington, died yesterday, aged 87. Born in Gisborne in 1857, he was the son of the late Mr. Ebenezer Baker, who was born at the Bay of Islands in 1830, and was present at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. He was the great-grandson of the late Rev. Charles Baker, who arrived at the Bay of Islands in 1828 and was associated with the Church Missionery Society. The Rev. Charles Baker received Governor Hobson on his arrival in New Zealand.
Mr. Baker was educated at The Terrace Grammar School, now Wellington College, from 1869 to 1873. After leaving school he worked with the Public Works Department, and then the National Bank.
In 1875 he founded the firm of Baker Bros., land agents, with offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. In 1883 he married the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Frederick Bradley, who arrived in New Zealand on the ship Adelaide. His wife died in 1927.
He is survived by his son, Mr. C. Maurice Baker, Eastbourne. His other son, Mr. Stanley Clifford Baker, died of war disabilities in 1931. There are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
