NOTES FOR CHCH WEB SITE 2012
Alfred Freeman Anstis born 1868, came from a farming background. His father John was a ploughman farmer of no mean ability. John is reported as having entered a competition at Mr J Mabey''s Paddock Taita on 11th October 1876, with other local farmers including John Daysh and James Cudby for a prize of $5, a considerable sum back then.
His wife was Clara Meager, the daughter of Henry and his wife the former Elizabeth Welch, was born in 1870. Clara was earnest in her pursuit of a proper education, to the extent of applying to the Education Board for help with study fees to allow her to attend Thorndon School as a "pupil teacher" (Teacher''s Aid?) which was presumably superior to Taita. This was declined. Further showing her determined character Clara eventually qualified as a "pupil teacher" at Taita. She resigned in 1923 when she married Alfred, and died at the relatively young age of 59 years, in 1929. Alfred followed in 1937 and the couple are buried together at Christ Church.
