Miss Maud Adams, on "Tete" as she was known to her many friends, was born ninety-eight years ago in London. As her mother died shortly after the birth, and her father decided to make a new life in this country, she arrived in New Zealand as a baby.

Maud, her sister and three others were the children of Captain Tyndall Adams, who at the early age of thirty-one had taken command of the sailing ship "Soukar" when her captain died whilst off Cape Horn. He brought her safely to New Zealand with her passengers and cargo of railway lines for the Lyttelton Tunnel.

In 1888 Captain Adams retired from the sea and brought "Brooklyn" a large house which he renamed "Te Awakahi". This house stood at the railway extension from Waterloo to Manor Park after World War 2. Miss Adam''s childhood was a very happy one; Captain Adams had married again and with four new sons the family was a large one.

She had clear memories of her Taita childhood; ringing the bells of the church after the traditional singing of Äuld Lang Syne" at New Years, after running across the fields at midnight; of good old country dances.

In those days the Hutt Valley was very prone to flooding; Miss Adams remembered the time when she could not ride her horse past the present site of Knox Church; how neighbours used to help one another lift carpets threatened by rising waters.

Captain Adams died in 1912, and the family moved to the house in High Street, where Maud and her brother Bill have lived for many years. This house contains many interesting links with the past; there is a fine steel engraving of the "Norfolk", Captain Adams'' first ship (which he joined at the age of fifteen); minute sailing ships embroidered in silk, the work of sailors in their off-watch hours.

Nearby, in Quaker Mason''s Avalon gardens were plants and trees from all over the world, many of which came from seeds brought to New Zealand in Captain Adams'' many voyages.

These events are all brought to mind in the passing of a lady of 98, one who "made everyone welcome". She brought to mind "an era of great sailing ships and large families sailing across the world to verdant but flood-bound Hutt Valley".

(these details are taken from an article written and researched by Mrs R. Stahl, of Epuni, to who we are very grateful).
