ADAMS JOSEPH TYNDALL 1842-1912
Account by his granddaughter Diana (Nan) Tustin, submitted to Christ Church archives in 2001

My grandfather, Captain Joseph Tyndall Adams was a Master Mariner and brought many immigrants to NZ in the 1870s and early 1880s.

He hurt his leg in an accident at sea and after the death of his mother and his wife, he brought his two young daughters to Taita to settle on a property he had brought on one of his earlier trips. They were accompanied by an elderly uncle and a housekeeper. The older boys in the family remained in England.

The property was at the end of what was then Cottles Lane (now Daysh St.) in Taita (now Avalon) and was situated in the vicinity of Nae Nae Intermidiate (sic) School about where the railway now runs.

My mother, Mabel, the elder daughter went to Wellington College, and my aunt, Maude, went to Taita Primary School. After a series of housekeepers, their father remarried and the new stepmother was not very much older than the girls. She had four sons, Leslie, Jack, Bill and Bob who were brought up in Taita and Taita Church played a big part in their lives.

My aunt recalled fondly the dances in Welch''s barn and how on New Year''s Eve, they would all go over and ring the Church Bell at midnight. She has so many tales to tell and I wish now that I had listened more closely when I was young because the tales were not quite so reliable in later years.

When Captain Adams died in 1911 (sic)(died 1912), the family moved to a property just south of Park Ave, bordered on the north side by Kilminster''s (sic) farm and on the south by the Blacksmith''s shop, I wonder how many people remember Mr Claughton and his roaring fires. It was just opposite an old house which is now part of a retirement village (was a Motel at one stage) and Mr. and Mrs. Hutcheson and their family lived there for many years.

Mr. Heggie leased the property and the family lived in the house known as Ashwell House and late 821 High St. My aunt had many stories of going eeling in the creek behind the house and having happy moonlight picnics.
After their stepmother''s death, my mother and father came to live with her but shortly after they came, my father died suddenly. My aunt and my mother continued to live in the old house till their deaths in 1964 and 1976 respectively. My mother was 90 and my aunt 98.
Every Staurday afternoon after my father''s death, we walked up to the Taita Church to tend the graves. That is how I met my husband. Strangely enough this young man was always cutting the hedge when we went by and my mother thought he was a nice lad as he left a bird''s nest intact. He was Charles Tustin and his father has a property next to the then Taita School (now Avalon I think). His mother Charlotte was a regular worshipper at the little Church and when her arthritis got so bad she could no longer walk to church. Canon Fry from St. James picked her up and brought her home. I still have vivid recollections of going to a Good Friday Service with her at Christ Church before we were married the next day in St. James.

Dear Mrs Erwin
I was sorry there was a misunderstanding about the care of the gravestones. I took it to mean the headstones but I knew these were intact as my daughter had been there the day before. When they were vandalised some years ago, Beddies the stonemasons repaired them for me and put new scoria on the graves. They sent me photographs of the finished work and it was very satisfactory.
The reason they are not concreted over is that my Mother Mabel Drewitt was adamant that she didn''t want them covered in. I could never bring myself to go against her wishes even though circumstances had changed and it was the obvious thing to do. We will have to give it some serious thought in the near future.
I was also upset that it was thought our plot was neglected. It has always been tended faithfully till I came to Auckland in 1988 and since then I have every year sent a donation of $100 to include our subscription and a donation to the upkeep of the church.
After my father''s sudden death in 1930 my Mother was absolutely devastated, and for most of my teenage years, every Saturday afternoon we walked from just south of Park Avenue up to the Churchyard to put flowers on the grave. The entrance at that time was from the Main Road as it was then called. Gradually as my Mother became more frail my husband and I took over the task and made regular visits with the lawn mower and kept the graves and their vicinity as tidy as we could.
I was interested that you knew Stephen in Patanga Cres. - it is a small world is it not?
(signed in pen)
Yours sincerely
Diana (Nan) Tustin

Title: [Masters listed in ''Watt Index'']
Article Abstract: From a list of Masters of vessels appearing in the ''Index to the New Zealand Section of the Register of All British Ships 1840 - 1950'' inclusive, otherwise know as the ''Watt Index''. Entries in the ''Watt Index'' give a description and history of each listed vessel. Events such as marine accidents or the loss of a vessel usually include the master''s name. It is possible therefore to trace particular events in the career of a master through the histories of one or more such vessels. Preliminary entries extracted here have only the master''s last name and initial, indicating that there is something on them in the source index. Completed ones also note the vessel name, official number and the year. Fuller information may be obtained by consulting the vessels section of the ''Watt Index'', and thereafter, other sources such as newspapers, if relevant. The N.Z.C. Co''s ship Wanganui, Captain J. T. Adams, arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday evening after a passage of 96 days from London. She brought 85 passengers.

Evening Post 3 January 1889
The Lower Hutt Hotel Fracas.
More than ordinary local interest attached to yesterday''s sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate''s Court, in consequence of the hearing of the case in which Joseph Adams, a well-known settler at Taita, and formerly master mariner, was charged, on remand from Wellington, with having on the 28th ultimo inflicted grievous bodily harm upon John D. Pinkerton, licensee of the Railway Hotel, Lower Hutt. Tho little courthouse was crowded with listeners. Messrs. Dilnot Sladden and J. S. Manning were the presiding Justices. The prosecution was conducted by Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, and accused was defended by Mr. R. K. Jackson.
Dr. Wilford deposed that he was called to attend the complainant between 7 and 8 p.m. on the 28th ult., and found him with a wound in the nose, which was bleeding. It was an incised wound about three-quarters of an inch long, formed by some sharp instrument, which had apparently penetrated the cartilage. He did not probe the wound, but he put in two sutures. The cut was about one and a half or two inches from the eye. He could not say that great force was used in inflicting the wound. There would be a slight scar when the wound healed. The injury might have been inflicted with the knife produced, but he did not consider the wound a dangerous one.
The complainant (J. D. Pinkerton) deposed he was a licensed victualler carrying on business at the Hutt. He saw the accused in his bar at 6.40 p.m. on the 28th ultimo with another man whom he did not know. Adams asked for two drinks and witness supplied them. Accused then spoke of a man in his employ whom witness had refused to supply with drink without payment. Adams said he had inquired into the matter. Without any answer from witness Adams continued the conversation, and witness inferred that the employe''s word was to be taken before his own. Messrs. Cooper and Mason then entered the bar. Accused stood in front of the counter and witness behind it. Cooper and Mason could see witness but not accused, a partition being between them. Accused wanted to continue his conversation about his man, and witness said, "I don''t want to hear any more about the affair," whereupon the accused asked, "Who are you" Witness replied, "As good as you at any time." Some further warm language was used on both sides, which accused followed up by saying, "There, take that," at the same time throwing the knife produced at witness, a distance of about six feet. The knife, which was open, stuck in witness on the nose, and dropped after about a second. The blood flowed freely. Witness picked up the knife, and subsequently gave it to Constable Harnett. Accused remained on the premises for some time after, and at first denied having thrown the knife. Accused remained at the door until arrested by Constable Harnett.
By Mr. Jackson — The knife was not fully open when witness picked it up. It must have come straight at him.
Frederick Cooper, nurseryman, of Wellington, proved that after both parties had roundly abused each other accused exclaimed "Take that," and instantly something struck Pinkerton, which came from Adams'' direction. Pinkerton was struck on the nose, the blood trickled down, but witness saw no weapon. Witness left hurriedly in order to catch the Wellington train, but before leaving he induced accused, who seemed to be more or less under the influence of liquor, to leave the house.
Mrs. Rose Pinkerton and Neils Jonson gave corroborative evidence. Constable Harnett stated that on his arrival at the hotel he found Pinkerton bleeding at the nose. Accused was standing in front of the hotel, a few paces from the door, and witness arrested him. Accused explained he had an altercation with Pinkerton, and having the knife in his hand, cutting tobacco, he let it fly at him.
By Mr. Jackson — There was no blood on the blade of the knife. The slight trace that he saw was on the handle.
Counsel having addressed the Court, the Chairman of the Bench said that he and his brother Magistrate had carefully considered the evidence, and were both of opinion that there was no case for a jury. An assault had, however, been committed, and one which they thought called for a severe penalty. The Court imposed a fine of £5, with £4 14s 6d costs half the fine to go to the prosecutor.

ADAMS. - On the 21st December, at his residence, Taita, Joseph Tyndall (sic) Adams, master mariner; aged 70 years
-
Captain Joseph Tyndall (sic) Adams, in the earlier days well known in New Zealand shipping circles, died at the Taita this morning. Captain Adams, who was born in London in 1842, went to sea at an early age in the ship Norfolk, and after a few years at sea, while still a young man, he reached the position of chief officer of the s.s. Soukar — one of the last vessels to carry passengers Home from India round the Cape of Good Hope. Shortly after the Soukar left India on his first voyage the captain died, and Mr. Adams, who was then only about 23 years of age, navigated her to England, and on arrival was given the command. He served in the Indian trade for some years, and when the Soukar was purchased by the Shaw Savill Company Captain Adams came to New Zealand in her. That was in the early ''70s. He commanded the Soukar for ten years, and shortly after the New Zealand Shipping Company was formed he transferred his services and was given command of the Hurunui, on her second voyage, in 1876. He afterwards commanded the Wairoa, in which he made a number of voyages to Wellington, and the Wanganui. When the later vessel was sold, in 1888, Captain Adams settled down at the Taita, where he has lived quietly ever since. He was married twice. He leaves three sons (the eldest being Mr. E. C. Adams, of the Union Company, Wellington), and two daughters by his first wife, and four sons by his second wife, who survives him.
