Evening Post 16 June 1884
The late Mrs. Hallman (sic), who died in Marton recently (says the Manawatu Times), was one of the oldest settlers in the colony, having arrived here in the ship Bolton as far back as 1840. The deceased lady was the widow of the late Mr. William Sykes, but re-married, and was the aunt of Mr. Sykes, contractor, of this town. She was greatly respected in the district of Rangitikei, where she had resided upwards of 20 years, and on the occasion of her funeral all the places of business in Marton were closed, whilst a numerous attendance of mourners testified the respect entertained for the memory of the departed.
