Evening Post 26 October 1949
Rev. J. W. Robinson
The death occurred at the Hutt Hospital on Monday of the Rev. John William Robinson, a well-known Anglican Minister, who during his career served in various parts of the North Island, also in England.
Mr. Robinson, who was 76, came to New Zealand with his parents in 1886, and worked for some years on his father''s fruit farm at Upper Moutere, Nelson. While in the Nelson Province he was an energetic lay worker. In 1913 he was ordained at Napier by Bishop (now Archbishop) Averill, the then Bishop of Waiapu, and immediately assumed charge of the mission at the railway construction camps at Matawai. In 1914 he was appointed assistant curate in the parish of Kilbirnie, Wellington, where her served until 1916. He was married at Kilbirnie in 1916 to Miss Irene Cattell-Webb, and in the same year became vicar of Raetihi, where he served until 1919. From Raetihi he was appointed vicar of Waimate North, in the Auckland diocese, and in 1925 became vicar of Huntly, where he served until 1929, in which year he became the first vicar of Norfolk Island, where he remained until he left for England in 1933. In England he served as rector of Shereford and vicar of Toftrees in the diocese of Norwich. Mr. Robinson served in the late war as chief air raid warden of his district. He retired in 1946, and came to live in Lower Hutt, where he gave valuable assistance in the parish of St. James.
Mr. Robinson was keenly interested in cricket and was vice-president of the Lower Hutt Cricket Club at the time of his death. He was also a Freemason and was at one time chaplain of Lodge Taupiri, in the Waikato.
During the latter part of his life Mr. Robinson was afflicted with deafness, which precluded his taking a prominent part in many of his wide interests. He was known as a devout and faithful parish priest, and made a lasting impression wherever he served. His genial and sympathetic nature won him many friends during his ministry. Beside his widow he leaves two sisters, Miss Robinson and Mrs. Hardy, both of Brooklyn.
The funeral will take place from St. James''s Church, Lower Hutt, tomorrow, after a service beginning at 2pm.
