The late Mr. William Riddler, who died at Petone on Thursday last, was one of the oldest settlers in the district. He arrived in Wellington by the ship Sir Thomas Parkes in the year 1842, Lord Petre being one of his fellow passengers. Mr Riddler was acively engaged in some of the skirmishes which took place during the Maori war, and was one of the party who went out to recover the body of Mr Gillespie, when that gentleman was murdered by the natives at the Hutt. He resided on his farm at Petone for 35 years, and never was outside the Wellington Heads since his arrival in the colony. The deceased gentleman leaves a large family, all of whom are doing well. The funeral will take place at 1 o''clock to-morrow.

RIDDLER.- On 22nd January, 1897, at the Taita after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude, Elizabeth, relict of the late Mr. William Riddler, of Petone; aged 86 years.

THE Friends of Mr. Thomas Riddler are invited to attend the Funeral of his late Mother, which will leave the residence of her Son-in-law (Mr. Samuel Death), Taita, for Christ Church Cemetery, Taita, To-morrow (Sunday), 24th January, at 1.45 p.m.
